well, Ames is just a silly parlor radical blowhard who confuses braying with cleverness. and he's a pretty creepy guy to boot, I recall him threatening me with violence several times, and a decade ago in Moscow that kind of threat was more serious than it is now. It's no great loss to the world.

And its not even a lucrative prank. A mere $2561 from over 200 people. That's a mere $12.80 a rube! Plus "Mark" what are you doing with a Pennsylvanian IP address?

Hoax! Hoax! Hoax!

You can fool all people some of the time, but you can only fool the Moscow Times all of the time!

That's five times now we got them with one of our pranks - that's five for five. Just send them a fax from "the Federal Service for Mass Media, Telecommunications, and the Protection of Cultural Heritage" and all of the sudden the eXile appears in the world press as the underdog fighting for press freedom.

Not only did we get worldwide press coverage, but we started getting donations "to keep our website open." $2,561 so far from over 200 generous donors. There's one born every minute.

See you in the funny papers.

Probably just nobody reads it anymore, and it is going broke. They can't make money selling sex in Moscow anymore - what a bunch of incompetents!

Their last lie might be their biggest lie: suggesting that somebody cares enough to close them down. Media martyrs - my ass.

"I don’t think asking why now is as important as asking from where. The answer from the latter is sure to shed light on the former. I doubt the order to inspect the eXile came directly from the Kremlin mount. Russia’s chinovniki are so obsequious to those above that I wouldn’t doubt one of them is make a little campaign to with hopes please the new boss. That or Russia’s middle management haven’t got the message to back off the media."

:) That was my next question! But the more I thought about it, the more it seemed like one of those old crime dramas where they have trouble finding the killer because everyone had a motive for wanting to kill the guy.

I suspect there is a lack of coverage in the western press because, well, they aren't very sympathetic victims. Also, if you don't comment on the eXile, you don't run the risk of being the brunt of their next joke. Oh, the irony...

Thanks for covering this and keep up the good work.

Good post, Sean - I agree that it doesn't make sense that this could come from the top.

On the English-language media coverage, I'm not so quick to assume that the under-coverage is related to some sort of callousness over some past slight made by Ames or others. Everyone who reads about Russia every day knows that it takes the New York Times about a month or so to catch up with an old story. Just today they are writing about the beheading video. Just chalk it up to mass media incompetence.

Also, that long article by Ames on Radar (which has quite a high readership) should count for something.

Any media getting shut down by government basically sucks, but when it is something alternative and satire-oriented like eXile, that makes it even more scary, no?

Sounds like the fight now is to get some cash together to move the eXile website onto a non-Russian server.
