Yes, the cynics may get a lot of ink and air time here, but the majority of Americans are still optimists overall. And as anyone who has found something that has made them happy, they want to "share" it with everyone else. Protestant evangelism has the same underlying motivations as far as wanting to share their secret to happiness. It's obviously annoying to those who like to stick to the same old traditions because they are familiar and comfortable. Americans proselytize the American form of democracy (representative republic) to the rest of the world, because, by and large, most American’s are quite happy with their freedoms and standard of living. Does he engage at all with Engerman's take on US-Soviet relations and if so, how? Or maybe, I should just wait to read it, huh?
