"And as anyone who has found something that has made them happy, they want to “share” it with everyone else."

You mean Americans are like Islamists?

Americans proselytize the American form of democracy (representative republic) to the rest of the world, because, by and large, most American's are quite happy with their freedoms and standard of living. Yes, the cynics may get a lot of ink and air time here, but the majority of Americans are still optimists overall. And as anyone who has found something that has made them happy, they want to "share" it with everyone else.

Protestant evangelism has the same underlying motivations as far as wanting to share their secret to happiness.

It's obviously annoying to those who like to stick to the same old traditions because they are familiar and comfortable.

that answer was very Clintonian

I guess that means it was a good and accurate answer. Reviews are written all the time for books and movies that the reviewer doesn't personally like. Why would you even presume that a review must be an endorsement?

If he had attacked your question, never answered it, and then used a Bible and US intelligence reports to justify that action, would it have been a Bush-onian answer?

Where is James Carville when I need him?

Where is Jack Doneghy when I need him? (Sorry, I couldn't resist. For all I know Sean has never watched 30 Rock...And if you haven't, Sean, I highly recommend it.)!

Thanks for the review. Now I have to add this to the heap of books I will try to skim while in CA for the holidays! Does your quick skimming of the interwar period reflect Fogelsong's treatment of this period? Of course, this is my period, so of the most interest to me, and I think still in need of a proper treatment (which I won't be giving it, but SOMEONE should). Does he engage at all with Engerman's take on US-Soviet relations and if so, how? Or maybe, I should just wait to read it, huh? Well, if you have a minute to jot your notes, it will help me determine whether or not I should order it for the holidays or wait until I am back in the arms of Brooklyn next year.

B

p.s. do let me know if you want a fuller answer via email to the query you posted over at my blog.

Hmm . . . Never knew I had it in me (Damn! If only I had an intern). I just don't want to give the impression that I only review books I do like. The next book I plan on reviewing might just be one of those that I don't like, but would recommend that it be read. (There I go again. Where is James Carville when I need him?)
