Commenter, I do not know what you are talking about in terms of this article discussing "anti-Russian biases in the U.S." As far as I can tell there is not a word about that topic, and to the contrary the author writes: "Fascism and xenophobia aren't simply the latest election campaign trump cards in the government's stacked deck. They are social realities." Seems to me the author is criticizing Russians, not those who are "biased" against them.

I'm a bit disappointed that he doesn't name names, especially Putin's. He writes: "It is completely obvious that the problem calls for intervention not only from the police, but also from politicians and educators." But who exactly is falling down on the job? Unless people are called to account by name, it's unlikely anything will change. In fact, I've read that some actions of those in power actually seem to encourage this sort of violence. Though I must admit that there seems to be a lot of personal risk in naming names like Anna Politkovskaya did, maybe the author fears for his safety.

Very interesting read with some points that I can personally relate to when it comes to anti-Russian biases in the US.

The JRL approved Russia friendlys (those regularly appearing at Johnson's Russia List) don't always offer the best available options for offsetting the skewed English language mass media coverage of the FSU.
